Orthodontic Treatment Before and After

    Braces Vs. Aligners

    Braces

Metal braces are the traditional, highly effective way of straightening teeth. Some wrap around the teeth, while others are glued to the surface.

These use a spring clip to hold in the wires, rather than ties and chains.

Ceramic brackets are made of a crystalline, composite, or glass material. These have been made more durable with new technology. Certain braces are more delicate than others, and will have dietary restrictions.

    Invisalign & 3M Aligners

Wearing aligners won't interrupt their appearance for class pictures and selfies. Aligners can also be safely worn during sports and gym class without the worry of injury to tongue or cheeks, as with metal braces.

Although aligners are convenient, they are also easy to misplace.  Custom aligners will feel smooth against the cheeks and tongue.  With Aligners, there are no dietary restrictions. Patients are able to continue eating all of their favorite crunchy and hard foods, including nuts, apples, and pretzels.

Some adults who had braces as teens may want to return to wearing braces for a "touch-up" in adulthood. This is especially common when patients failed to wear their retainer as recommended after their initial orthodontic treatments during their teen years. Without proper retainer use, the teeth may shift back out of alignment to the extent that they need to be re-corrected with braces.

    Common issues addressed by braces:

Braces can be used to correct mildly crooked smiles, but they are also the go-to orthodontic treatment for more serious tooth alignment problems.

    • If you or your teen suffer from a cross-bite, where one or more teeth fall inside of the opposite tooth, braces can correct this issue and make it easier to chew.
    • An open bite, where the front teeth do not come together properly, can also be corrected with braces.
    • Sometimes overbites and under-bites require more extensive orthodontic intervention, but the final stage in treating these alignment issues is often a treatment period with braces.
    • One very common problem that braces are used to address is crowded teeth. Crowding occurs when the jaw is too small to comfortably accommodate all of the teeth, so they come in turned, overlapped, and crooked. Not only do crowded teeth look unappealing, but they are also hard to keep clean and can affect speech.

To treat crowding, we may remove one or more teeth from the mouth before straightening the remaining teeth with braces. Correcting crowding is an important step towards ongoing dental health since it makes the teeth easier to keep clean. A full evaluation will determine your best course of treatment.

    Brands of Aligners

    3M™ Clarity Aligners

A discreet, removable way to fix your smile that's custom designed and virtually invisible

Your initial appointment will consist of a dental exam, a discussion of your goals, and, if you are a good fit for Clarity Aligners, the diagnostic images necessary to plan your treatment. After your consultation, our contracted orthodontist will begin planning treatment using the 3M software algorithm.

You’ll receive a preview of your new smile, and if it matches your expectations, our contracted orthodontist will order your aligners. Once they arrive, you’ll have a second appointment to try on the first set and learn how to use them. You will have a "wear" schedule that outlines how long you should wear each aligner. It’s typically one or two weeks per aligner. You’ll need to keep your aligners in for 22 hours a day. Treatment will last anywhere from 6 to 24 months, based on your personalized plan. In most cases, you’ll see the contracted orthodontist every few weeks so they can evaluate your progress.

    Invisalign®

Aligners as unique as your smile.

Invisalign clear aligners are virtually invisible — people may not even notice you’re wearing them. You can remove them to eat and drink, to brush and floss, or for special occasions. There are no metal brackets or wires that could irritate your mouth or break.

Unlike other brands, Invisalign clear aligners are made from patented SmartTrack material, which is more comfortable and provides a better fit. Invisalign aligners are also trimmed based on your gum line for comfort and appearance.  Your doctor will tell you how often you should change to new aligners (this can vary based on your individual treatment plan). Many doctors recommend changing Invisalign clear aligners weekly or every other week.  Your doctor will schedule regular appointments, usually about once every four to six weeks. The goal of these visits is to ensure your Invisalign treatment is progressing as planned.
